Legends of Red Sonja #4, and the hunt draws ever closer…

The penultimate issue of Legends of Red Sonja gives us two great stories, one by legendary fantasy author Mercedes Lackey and paranormal author and X-Men scribe Marjorie Liu. Gail Simone ties it all together with the continuing hunt for Red Sonja. The stories continue as the band of hunters seem to be drawing closer and closer to the She-Devil.

Jenny’s Story: Parallax, by Mercedes Lackey, gives us a story by Jenny, who was kidnapped and saved by Red Sonja – we get Jenny’s story, where she gushes about fighting alongside Red Sonja and becoming besties afterwards, with art that complements not only Jenny’s dreamy view of the events, but also affords a peek at the real story. It’s a fun look at the “fantasy/reality” that happens in our heads after meeting a hero/heroine. Art is by Nei Ruffino.

Marjorie M. Liu’s She Lives Still – wow. It’s that good. To tell you the gist of it, I risk dropping a spoiler, but suffice to say that it’s another story of Sonja rescuing someone in need, with interesting consequences. If you follow Gail Simone on Twitter (@gailsimone), there has been some amusing discussion about Sonja’s ongoing “dry spell” – suffice to say, it’s addressed. Phil Noto has art duties here.

I love the Legends of Red Sonja series and hope to see more of these down the line. Getting these great little stories, set within a larger tale, really brings depth to Sonja, and makes her even more fun. Not every tale has to be epic, and some of them are just fun.

The issue hits stands in a few hours – make sure this is tucked into your stack. Five out of 5 metal bikinis.

About Author

Rosemary Kiladitis is a children’s librarian, a mom, and a proud fangirl/nerdgirl. She did her homework while watching reruns of the 1966 Batman series, which led to her longstanding relationship with the Bat, and she’s pretty sure that Barbara Gordon is the real reason she went to library school. She loves superheroes, supervillains, and is secretly married to Hellboy. Or Loki. She can’t remember, but it’s one of them.
