We got a press release for the Krantz Vol 1 kickstarter the other day. We get lots of kickstarter announcements but this one had something that caught my eye,
“Krantz, a time traveller stuck in the 16th century, must find a way to survive without changing the future he was sent to save.”
Right off the bat, my kind of book. So let’s look a little deeper shall we?
Originally banned by the Catholic Church and never before available in English, KRANTZ is the story of Ross Krantz, a time traveler trapped in the 16th Century after preventing a brutal Protestant massacre known as the “Night of St. Esteban”. With the help of Nostradamus, Catherine de Medici, and other legends of the Renaissance, he must find a way home without rewriting history in the process!
“Originally banned by the Catholic Church”, Oh really? Raised in the Catholic Church I’m always interested in anything they try to cover up. I reached out to the marketing agency that was doing the promotion for the book and lo and behold they connect me with the editor on the project, Mr. Scott O Brown, who graciously sent me a review copy of the book.
– Are you beginning to see why writing about kickstarter projects can be a bit of a task? But this one struck all the right notes, a finished story, a plot that resonated, and some interesting history. I’m not saying every project we look at has to have all those things but it helps. –
First the art. Originally presented in the pages of the Italian (and Argentinian) magazine “Revista Skorpio” in the 1980’s the art is very representative of the era, it reminded me immediately of the type of story I remember from 2000AD or Heavy Metal Magazine. In some cases that can be a good thing, such as it is here. Horacio Lalia’s style is detailed, dark, and haunting. Perfect for a fantasy story that takes place in the Renaissance.
It’s a time travel story, so I expected a quick jump through some tech and a little science then onto the adventure. I was pleasantly surprised. This is definitely more of a “Fantasy” time travel story, Jorge Morhain shows us none of the science you’d expect (until much later on), which works. As stated in Arthur C Clarke’s law, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. And this kind of story set amidst the religious culture of the Renaissance definitely places science squarely in the realm of magic, black magic to be precise.
It’s hard to decide how much to really give away of the story it’s a collection of short stories, all linked through our time traveler Ross Krantz, and it clocks in around 80 pages. He begins his journey in the 1500’s attempting to avoid a massacre that would bring about the birth of Adolf Hitler hundreds of years later. As is par for the course he is successful but time isn’t as easy to control as all that. I was confused at first when the story switched from that original idea and focused on Krantz being stranded in the past and his growing relationship with Miguel De Notre-Dame, the man who would be known to us as Nostradamus. He crosses paths with many famous (and infamous) historical figures and the action keeps the story from bogging down in “history”. It’s quite a ride.
This is one of those books, the kind of book that normally you’d be lucky to see an excerpt of, in a reprinted edition somewhere, maybe, if you were lucky. It’s a piece of comic book history, and a really engaging story to boot!
By now I’m sure you’re wondering where you can buy it. Well you can’t. Not yet anyway. What you can do is click the link below and go to the kickstarter and get in early! Otherwise you’ll be waiting for the eventual release in comic shops. Don’t wait, go to the kickstarter, there’s a reward level that gets you a DRM free copy of the graphic novel.
This is one you want to read. I give it 4 out of 5 Apocolyptic Prophecies!
