There is no way I should have loved this comic as much as I did. Yes, I am a Kiss fan but the comic tie-ins they’ve done since Psycho Circus have not thrilled me. They’ve lacked plot but still managed to take themselves way too seriously. This comic is absolutely silly, flighty and completely adorable.
The comic is a collection of shorts depicting various adventures the members of Kiss go on. The catch is, they’re school age versions of themselves. Of course it’s not the actual members of Kiss but their character alter egos, Starchild, Space Ace, Cat Man and The Demon. They face such typical childhood difficulties as disappearing boots, a new babysitter, tackling a newspaper route, back to school clothes shopping and killer doppelganger robots…ok maybe we all didn’t have problems with boots disappearing.
The stories are well paced, short and sweet. I found myself laughing out loud more than once. Granted most of the humor comes from jokes only a Kiss fan will get. The babysitter is named Christine Sixteen and the outfits they buy for back to school, well let’s just say, any true Kiss fan will find them quite familiar.
Realistically though, who else is going to buy this comic but a Kiss fan. It is a good pick for kids who will just appreciate the simple humor without the in jokes being necessary at all. I enjoyed it and I’ll continue to pick it up because I can definitely use a good laugh from time to time. Kiss Kids delivers that, with a shot of nostalgia as a chaser.
