Hey kids, once in a while even yours truly has to defer to someone of a higher authority in the lore of other realms. In this case, I turn over my corner of What’cha Reading to my daughter Katie (Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines).
At this year’s New York Comic Con, she had the chance to chat with Jeremy Whitley (Princeless), where Katie managed to get some very hush-hush info out of him. Now that it is out in the open, Jeremy made good on his promise for an interview with Katie. So without further delay, I give you Katie and Jeremy…
KP: What was it like to write a story completely different from your usual comic books
JW: It was nice. I know the MLP world pretty well, so it was nice to not have to build everything from the ground up. I just got to pick up a couple characters that I really liked and tell a story I thought was a lot of fun.
KP: Did you bring over your usual female warrior sensibilities from Princeless to MLP? If so, how did you adapt it for MLP and their fans?
JW: I think a lot of that exists in MLP already. That’s one of my favorite things about the show. Much like Princeless, I feel the message in MLP as a series is that there is no “right way” to be a girl. All of the Mane 6 are different and we’re never told that one is more right than the others. I think Rainbow Dash is probably the closest to Adrienne, but it’s nice to have that variety.
KP: How did you prepare to write Discord’s unpredictable character?
JW: I watched the three MLP episodes with Discord a lot, which was fun for me because I love the character. I took inspiration from the character they create and a little bit from the character that he’s based on, Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation. I love that as long as it fits the character can literally have Discord do anything I want on the page. My editor only told me no once in the whole story, because apparently there are no cars allowed in Equestria.. Who knew?
KP: Has writing this story made you a brony?
JW: I don’t know. I’ve always been a big fan of the show just because I think it’s well written and a fun show for parents to watch with kids. And that’s how I was exposed to it, by watching it with my daughter. I don’t, however, watch it at the exclusion of other things nor do I feel the show ought to court me as a watcher. So, if a brony is defined by love for the show, then I suppose I’ve been one for a while, but if it’s defined by the handful of fans who make demands of the show, I’d rather not be a part of that.
KP: What role are the Cutie Mark Crusaders playing in this issue?
JW: They’re the center of this issue. It’s all about their never ending quest for their Cutie Marks. In this story they finally run out of ideas for how to get their cutie marks and determine that the only way to get them is to try things they would never think of, so they turn to the most unpredictable creature they know.
KP: Will this issue expand more on Discord being “reformed”?
JW: Yes. This issue picks up after the events of “Keep Calm and Flutter On”, when Discord decides to reform his ways. We see a kinder, but no more predictable Discord in this issue. And he may still have some of the Chaos God tendencies we’ve all grown so fond of.
KP: Will Fluttershy be in this issue, or any of the other mane six, or will this issue be exclusively be starring Discord and the CMC?
JW: Fluttershy, as well as the rest of the Mane 6, appear only briefly and aren’t all that important to the story. This is Discord and the Crusaders’ time to shine.
KP: Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule for this email interview!
JW: It’s my pleasure! I hope you all enjoy reading the issue as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Katie is looking forward to reading (and reviewing) this MLP issue. I don’t know about Chuck but I may just be peeking over Katie’s shoulder as she reads it.
