When you think of magic who comes to mind? Sherlock Holmes? Of course not. So imagine a scenario where one of the world’s foremost magicians, Harry Houdini, who was known for having an opinion and no shrinking violet when it came to voicing it, is thrust beneath the nose of the world’s foremost consulting detective. Two highly opinionated and outspoken individuals like these can only be fast friends right? I didn’t think so either.
Holmes takes little time dressing down Harry and pointing out all the “obvious” (to Holmes at least) tricks Houdini uses to dupe his audience. Houdini is, of course, slightly put off by the attack on his act but attempts to enlist Holmes help anyway. It seems there is some sort of big bad mystic who claims he can use spirits to attack not only Houdini but innocents as well.
This is a wonderful idea for a plot considering in real life Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini were friends for a time, that is until Mr Doyle’s constant insistence that Houdini’s powers were a “divine gift” a statement that caused Mr Houdini to declare Doyle’s beliefs “applesauce” and “hogwash” which it seems may have put a damper on their relationship. It’s wild to think that this fictional/historical team-up has some roots in real life.
So, can Houdini and Holmes get past their differences and solve the case? It’s a Victorian Buddy Cop Movie Extravaganza! Well no, no it isn’t but it is a cool team up, check out the preview on tuesday!
