Holiday Gift Guide – What’cha Reading Style!

What are you gonna get that wonderful sweet amazing person in your life who loves comics???

IMG_20121012_084742Well if your like my wife and kids you don’t wait for Christmas. Every year on Father’s Day Weekend (as it’s known in my house) I receive a Four-day VIP pass to New York Comic Con. That pretty much tops anything else they could buy me (comic book related anyway).

Yes, my wife rocks.

Now if you’re not as crazy (crazy wonderful!) as my wife then you’ll need some more down to earth suggestions.

Gift certificates. Seemingly lame but actually pure gold to the comic book fan. Stores like Midtown Comics have gift cards for sale online. Local shops are hip to the idea as well, Royal Collectibles in Forest Hills, N.Y. promotes their gift cards year around (yes that was a hint to all my people!). Don’t forget if you’ve purchased said loved one a Kindle or Nook (or iPad I guess) a gift card to the right app store can get them steps closer to enjoying that sweet digital comic goodness!

But if you read my stuff you know that I’m partial to print so onward my friends into the realm of…

Graphic Novels! (graphic novels, graphic novels wait, was that an echo?) – But which ones?

IMG120428ASaga: Volume 1! Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples are absolutely kicking ass with this series. If your loved one has already read this buy it for yourself! Buy it from Amazon or your local shop!

From the Image site “[Saga is] the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in a sexy, subversive drama for adults.” I couldn’t agree more, this is a must have for any comic book fan, fantasy fan, or just a fan of great literature.

HHcvrTPIMG120555Hoax Hunters, Volume #1 – I love this series, think of it as the anti X-files. Sure the truth is out there but sometimes it’s better if you never hear about it. What if there were an organization tasked with not only searching for the truth about mysterious occurrences but keeping it secret? Well they’d be the bad guys right? Decide for yourself. Also? Best titled trade of all time!

Well we’ve covered, umm well those are all from Image aren’t they… Well two from Image proper and one from Top Cow. I’m sure you’ve also noticed by now that this article is lacking in the Superhero department. I read Superhero comics, I read a ton of them. But to be honest it’s been a long time since I’ve felt anything from the big two has been all that groundbreaking. Don’t get me wrong DC has put out some good stuff, Marvel as well but odds are if you’re buying for a comic fan, they’ve read already or at least the things they were interested in. But let me not neglect the mainstream. Here’s one or two.

978-1-4012-3465-2Widely hailed as one of the best series to come out of The New 52, Batwoman brings a whole new take on the female superhero. Survivor of a kidnapping that took her mother’s life and the disappearance of her twin sister, she joined the army (just like Daddy) was expelled from West Point under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”. She then became the vigilante known as Batwoman and is kicking criminal ass all over Gotham! The Hydrology storyline is creepy and interesting with more than enough layers of plot and character growth to sink your teeth into.

The combination of breathtaking art and tight storytelling make this a welcome addition to any collection.

Deadpool_Kills_the_Marvel_Universe_1Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe TP
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Dalibor Talajic
Cover Art: Kaare Andrews
What if everything you thought was funny about Deadpool was actually just disturbing? What if he decided to kill everyone and everything that makes up the Marvel Universe? What if he actually pulled it off? Would that be FUN for you? The Merc with a Mouth takes a turn for the twisted in a horror comic like no other!

Cullen Bunn (whose work on The Sixth Gun is also a must see!) pens a disturbing graphic over the top story, one that any Deadpool fan would love! I get a lot of grief for loving the Merc with A Mouth but I still think he’s the man!

I hope this little list has given you something to think about when you’re looking at those Wolverine boxers in Target (Put them down slowly and walk away. Yes, walk away). And I hope you all have an amazing holiday season, may it be filled with comics, and movies, and action figures galore!
