Helheim, Volume 1: The Witch War – Viking Horror That Belongs on Your Bookshelf

580, A.D. The North. There is a war between two powerful witches, the beautiful Bera and the crone, Groa. Both command unbelievable power – the power to summon creatures, the power to steal souls – the power to raise the dead themselves. Trapped between these two warring women is a group of Vikings led by Kirk and his son, Rikard. A devastating death gives way to witchcraft of the most horrifying sort for these Norsemen: the creation of a draugr, an undead warrior, whose very presence tests the men’s will – is this their former comrade that they should fight alongside once again, or is it an unholy creature that should be sent to its final rest?

I LOVED this book. I’m all for a good sword and sorcery book, and Helheim offers both in huge amounts. There are epic battles, bloodshed, witchcraft, and yet, a deep storyline and a personal conflict that tears at the characters, particularly Kirk. Cullen Bunn gives us an epic tale and Joelle Jones provides the sweeping landscapes and blood-soaked skirmishes.

The artwork keeps eyes riveted to the pages – if you can get this in print as opposed to digital, please do, because the spreads are amazing. There are great, menacing close-ups and huge backgrounds that show the bleakness of the North in winter and the devastation of an all-out battle.

Cullen Bunn promises us that this isn’t the end – I really hope he means it.
