Greetings Gothamites! Have you recovered from this week’s episode yet? It was called “Into the Woods” but the characters seemed to be going down the rabbit hole. Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) still make a great team even though stealing police evidence is illegal. It’s all in an effort to clear Detective Gordon of Officer Pinkney’s and Theo Galavan’s murders. Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) has yet to even leave Elijah Van Dahl’s funeral before Grace (Melinda Clarke), Sasha (Kaley Ronayne) and Charles (Justin Mark) start plotting against him. They will learn later on this is not a good idea. Barbara Keane (Erin Richards) is back. She is seen at a gathering of other inmates, revealing everything she had been through and done. She is released into the care of Dr. Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong).
This second half of Gotham has been nothing short of unpredictable. It was obvious Oswald could never be fully “cured” but the way he reverted back to his Penguin ways was nothing short of gruesome. However, it was effective for more than just shock value. It ushered in the real nature of The Penguin all Batman fans have come to know. Bruce (David Mazouz) and Selina (Camren Bicondova) resumed their co-habitation once again, free-running and jumping between buildings, living out on the streets and even aiding a wounded Detective Gordon. However, their lifestyles always seem to get in the way just as they’re about to make that connection. As great as the other characters were, this episode belonged to Detective Gordon and Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith). The cat-and-mouse game between the two of them was fantastic. Ben McKenzie and Cory Michael Smith put in maybe their finest performances to date. The scene in the woods was the best part of the entire show.
The excitement of Gotham just keeps building and building as each episode goes by. Judging by what the previews for next episode revealed, we’re on to something huge. We see the return of many old and new favorites with different looks and personalities. Episodes like “Into the Woods” are one of the numerous reasons why Gotham has been renewed. The cast and crew are excellent and give the dedicated fan base what it wants.
