If you follow What’cha Reading on facebook and twitter you no doubt noticed that our local comic shop (or home away from home) Royal Collectibles has been hosting some very cool events lately. Tonight was the TMNT Pizza Party so I reached out to one of our favorite members of Royal, Steven, to give us a recap of the event…
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Party! at Royal Collectibles
by Steven Biscotti
It was “Go ninja, go ninja, go ninja, go” from 5 to 8pm today at Royal Collectibles! Your friendly neighborhood comic shop in Forest Hills continued it’s goodwill to the neighborhood by hosting it’s first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Party. It was a huge success and definitely would have left Michelangelo shouting “Cowabunga!”
After the success Royal Collectibles had on July 23rd with Batman Day and the Paul Azaceta (Outcast), Khary Randolph & Emilo Lopez (TechJacket) artist signing sponsored by Cadence Comic Art, many left excited and wondering what the next in-store event would be. Admittedly, Royal Collectibles pondered this very same question until Diane Giordano came up with the idea of “how about we have a pizza party?” And what better comic oriented characters go better with pizza than the Ninja Turtles? And what famous group that loves their pizza has a number 1 film at the box office? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Naturally, this idea was a massive success in the making. Through in store advertisement, Instagram and Facebook posts, and good ‘ol word of mouth, the TMNT Pizza Party turned out to be an even bigger hit than expected.
To make it even more than just “come on in and slap a slice on a plate”, Royal’s offered 15% off any TMNT merchandise, and a pub style trivia contest created and led by What’cha Reading’s very own, Robert Lazauskas. The trivia started at 7pm and featured 20 questions ranging from pre-TCRI turtle to full-grown Ninja Turtle difficulty. Questions such as “what piece of surfer slang was shouted by both the TMNT and Bart Simpson? (Cowabunga), to “who was the fifth and only female TMNT, who joined the gang in the Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation? (Venus De Milo) were asked. Prizes were awarded to the top three winners, which included Volume 1 of IDW’s original reprints of Eastman and Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Playmates Toys’ TMNT deluxe figures to Kidrobot’s Ooze Action Turtle keychain.
At the close of a very good day (one that was more alive than an audience at a Vanilla Ice concert) for Turtles fans, comic fans, Loyal Royal followers, and all around good-natured people, many were left pondering, yet again, “When’s the next event??”
