“Based on Saban’s long-running Power Rangers franchise, five teens from Angel Grove High are granted superpowers and giant robot dinosaur Zords to defend Earth against the alien villain Rita Repulsa. When Repulsa creates an evil Green Power Ranger by brainwashing recent transfer student Tommy, the team is able to free him from her grasp and get him on their side. But with remnants of Repulsa’s control still stirring in the back of Tommy’s mind, he must confront the fact he may be more of a danger to his new team than a help. This is “Green Ranger: Year One.”
Scorpiana and The Green Ranger clash over the power coin and the resulting battle looks pretty grim for Tommy until back-up finally arrives! I really love the art in this book, the Power Rangers and villains look much more fluid and believable than in the live action show. Huh that’s strange isn’t it? My suspension of disbelief is less strained reading a comic than watching actors on a screen? Maybe it’s the visual pacing that feels smoother in comic book form. The dialog works as well seems reading it instead of hearing it cuts a little of the cheesyness factor.
I have to admit that for a show I normally sit through to appease my son the comic is actually quite fun. Old fans and new should definitely check it out.
