When I heard this was a title by Irish comic scribe, Garth Ennis, I practically murdered the rest of the What’cha Reading crew in their sleep calling “dibs” on reviewing this one. From his legendary Eisner award-winning title run on Preacher to his recently wrapped finale on The Boys, Ennis has long dominated the art form by turning it on its collective ear with his subversive wit and controversial views towards God, religion, and the deified nature of superheroes. And he pulls no punches when tackling these traditionally sensitive subjects with his unique and hilariously outrageous prose. When I picked up his more recent work, Red Team, I expected more of that same perverse writing style. Surprisingly, I consider his first issue Red Team a more grounded work and uncharacteristic of Ennis. And it works for me.
Owing a nod to the historical and illegal English court of law, the “Star Chamber”, the story focuses on a group of police officers who have decided to cross the line and execute a criminal who they have failed to successfully convict during a 2 year investigation. Although Ennis has covered the subject of vigilantism in The Boys and on his run on Marvel’s The Punisher, there is none of the over the top escapism in his approach to the material. This time out, he appears to be making an honest attempt to convey the reality of the effect a decision like this has on a group of cops. Ennis immediately grabs you by the throat and throws you down the road where these individuals are headed. With art provided by Craig Cermak, only time will tell whether this title will hold its own with Ennis’ past work. I trust in Ennis…………I’m in.

They’ve taken down one drug lord after another with a careful blend of meticulous surveillance and applied violence, but their latest case has even them stumped. Their frustration leads them to take extreme measures – setting them on a path from which there can be no coming back. As they’re about to discover, doing the wrong thing can be very, very seductive.
