The first shots have been fired in this spring’s Harbinger Wars, and the folks at Valiant are running for cover! Joshua Dysart and Duane Swierczynski have dovetailed their two ongoing titles, Bloodshot and Harbinger, into a slam-bang mini series that is sure to shake the foundation of the Valiant Universe. Bloodshot, an unstoppable nanite enhanced killing machine, has gone rogue from Project Rising Spirit and attacked one of their organization’s secret bases in search of his true origin and memories. After briefly battling a group of superhuman children being raised there, Bloodshot has to deal with the revelation that he was made to hunt down and collect super human children known as psiots, and he had “collected” most of these kids from their families. He vows to escape with them and free them from PSR‘s control.
The Harbinger foundation, under the leadership Toyo Harada, are PSR‘s arch-rival in collecting psiots. While PSR works with the government and sends their psiots on missions, Harada is building a personal superhuman army to help shape the world according to his own vision. Recently a former drug addict and extremely powerful psiot, Pete Stanchek quit the Harbinger foundation after finding out the meglo-maniacal lengths Harada would go to in his quest to fulfill his dream. Building an army of his own to take down Harada, Stancheck recruits Harbinger Foundation rejects and activates their powers. Now his rag-tag team of Renegades is on the run, hiding from the Harbinger Foundation and Project Rising Spirit while trying to work together despite their differences in personalities and various mental disorders that marked them as rejects in the first place. When both Stanchek and Harada find out about the young psiot children freed from the facility, both want them on their sides. Project Rising Spirit wants them back for their own purposes and are implementing some H.A.R.D. Corps solutions to the problem (wink wink). Only problem standing in all of their way: Bloodshot.
Harbinger Wars #1 is good jumping on point for anyone who has been hesitant about getting into the Valiant Universe. Although it is a direct continuation of the story-lines established in both Bloodshot and Harbinger, it uses a set of flashbacks during a congressional hearing, masterfully drawn by Clayton Crain, to fill you in on Project Rising Spirit. Bloodshot, and a mental projection sequence from the Bleeding Monk (the worlds oldest psiot) gives you the info that you need on Harada, Stancheck and the eventual collision of all the forces at play in the Harbinger Wars. It also has a handy graphic on the inside cover laying out the various factions and their abilities.
Valiant is pushing the envelope with this mini, running not only two crossover titles (Bloodshot #10-#13 and Harbinger #11-#14) by the same writers ( Yayyyy Continuity!), but they are also releasing an 8-bit video game titled Harbinger Wars: Battle for Las Vegas. You can play along as either Bloodshot or Pete Stancheck fighting your way through various levels on both your Iphone or Android phone. As the issues come out, more levels are added to the game. To celebrate this union of gaming and comics, Valiant is soliciting 8-bit variant covers by artist Matthew Waite for all its ongoing covers in the month of June.
