Flash Gordon: He'll Save Every One Of Us

Flash Gordon. If you’ve made it through reading that without singing the theme song to the same-titled movie, then congrats, you’re one up on me. In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, here. You’re welcome.

It was with that video and that movie firmly in my head that I said I wanted to review Dynamite’s reboot of Flash Gordon. And I was pleasantly surprised, because although the art has a retro feel in drawing style and color palette, and although Flash, Dale Arden, and Ming the Merciless are all present in the first issue, it doesn’t feel cheesy like the movie did. (To give the film a fair shake, I didn’t discover it until it had been out for about ten years, which was just long enough in terms of cinematic technology to make those special effects seem not so special.) Instead, the comic had a nice vintage feel without seeming dated. The story line is a little disjointed, introducing us to Dale and Flash a year before the main action of the story happens, when Dale is a science reporter and Flash is a ne’er-do-well daredevil being chastised by his father, and then suddenly dumping us on Mongo (and shortly after Arboria) with no warning. We get the rudimentary details of their space travel – vortexes and crystals – without much else of their back story. The artistic team might be hoping we’re familiar with the movie’s plot line to get us over this rough transition; I’m not sure. At any rate, I’d like to see some more plot development in future issues. I’ll pick Flash Gordon up again to see if they do, because Flash is a hero I’ve known since childhood (due in large part to Queen), and I want this book to find its feet. It’s got the potential to be awesome, just as so many of the latest reboots are.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 Lightning Bolts.
