In What’cha Reading’s review of Ant-Man – “An Astonishing Tale of Family Fun”, the most exciting aspect of the movie was Evangeline Lilly (The Hobbit Trilogy, Real Steel, Lost) and her role as Hope Van Dyne. Hope, the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne, in the Marvel Comics lore is Red Queen. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, changes were made and Hope become the next in line to inherit the role as super-hero The Wasp. While the film teased this, along with featuring a muscular Lilly who appeared ready for her super-hero debut, fans were disappointed to only get a mid-credit scene teasing her future. We see Michael Douglas as Pym revealing that he’s worked on a suit for her to wear as The Wasp to which she replies “It’s about damn time.” The line, echoing Terrence Howard’s “Next time, baby” near the end of Iron Man in regards to Rhodey becoming War Machine, and serving as a rally cry for Marvel to finally showcase the female super heroes of the Marvel Universe, served as a great promise for the future. “It’s about damn time” Hope says. But when?
While promoting this month’s Ant-Man, bringing a close to Phase Two of the M.C.U., Evangeline Lilly has been quite outspoken in regards to her becoming The Wasp. “Marvel hasn’t told me, but I kind of, again, fabricating my own… I think that she could be and that it could be a great, I mean, I would love to see a storyline where Hope somehow, I don’t know, tries to find her mom or meets her or something happens where there’s some amazing reunion. I think that would be super cool, and I have my dream casting already, for my mom.” In regards to her mom, we do not know if and when we’ll see Janet Van Dyne on-screen again (she’s revealed during one of the flashback scenes in the film.) If it’s up to Michael Douglas, he’s already said that he’d like to see his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, play his on-screen wife. But, if it’s up to Lilly, she’d like to work with the fourth actress that played Catwoman – Michelle Pfeiffer. “It’s got to be Michelle Pfeiffer. That was my favorite of all time of all the comic book female characters, but Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. Not just anybody or anything, not even like in the comic books, Michelle Pfeiffer.”
While Evangeline Lilly has remained positive that she’ll eventually don the costume and fight alongside Ant-Man (and fans should too!) Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has said the following “She was included in early versions of Civil War but there are so many characters in Civil War that we didn’t want to do her a disservice, like she flies in, ‘I’ve got the costume now’, and she flies out. With Ant-Man, and I’m not saying thats what Ant-Man does in the movie, but we already know him, we’ve already seen him. We haven’t seen her as Wasp and we don’t want to rob the opportunity of seeing her in the outfit for at least almost the first time, and seeing her dynamic with Scott in a way it could play out, so we’re saving it. But its going to be in Phase three for sure.”
So there you have it (and I can now rest easy.) “Phase Three for sure”, straight from Kevin Feige himself! Have you seen Ant-Man yet? Are you excited to see The Wasp in a future Marvel Studios film? Sound off below!
