Big Trouble in Little China is a cult classic, and I mean that in the best way possible. If by some chance you haven’t caught the movie playing at 1 AM, this is a great way to get introduced to Jack Burton and the supernatural world he’s been immersed in ever since he helped his friend Wang Chi battle the sorcerer Lo Pan. And if none of that makes sense? It’s time for you to hitch a ride on the Pork Chop Express.

The movie is tremendously entertaining because it’s such a wild mashup of styles: action, fantasy, and kung-fu, and the comic is no different. Within the first two pages, a demon intrudes on Jack’s late night truck-driving soliloquy and after a failed fist fight winds up as a sort-of pet/co-pilot (think of a demonic Clyde the orangutan from Every Which Way But Loose). And that’s just the start of a wild story that’s told tongue-firmly in cheek—Pete the demon’s “Buy Me a Drink and I’ll Tell You I’m 18” shirt was my personal favorite gag. Along the way, there’s a return to Chinatown and a reunion with Wang and Egg, tales of Jack’s failed romances, and of course, another evil sorcerer to battle. The artwork for these epic battle scenes is great: bold strokes and bright pops of color that really convey action, along with bright lightning when magic is used. It’s a fun retro feel that really makes the story come alive.

Just like the first five minutes of the movie Big Trouble in Little China always hook me in (I’m good friends with the 1AM showing on TV), the first issue of the comic has me looking forward to more adventures with Jack, Wang, Egg, and Pete, who might just be my favorite new character in a comic book. I give it 4.5 out of 5 Lightning Bolts.

Julie Hegner has been descending the geek rabbit hole since she watched her first episode of Star Trek at age eight. A longtime fan of Trek, Who, X-Files, and the Whedonverse, it was only a matter of time until hanging out with other geek girls and repeatedly watching Tom Hiddleston led her to the awesomeness of comics. She takes a special joy in reading about ladies who kick ass, but in general anything with a good storyline floats her boat. You can tweet @julz91 on Twitter.
