“From Princess to Queen to Prisoner in one day” There’s a coup forming in Helium and our beautiful and resourceful Dejah Thoris will have to go it alone if she wants to get to the bottom of it!
It was refreshing to read a story where the female lead tells her husband sorry I’ve got to do this on my own. Frank Barbiere does well melding the modern reality of how women act with the ancient look and feel of Barsoom. Her father, the Jed’s, disappearance leads Dejah through a plot and city that is totally new to her. Stripping away her authority that has been so much a part of her character since Burrough’s A Princess of Mars and showing her what her world is like for those not on a throne is a great idea, and Frank does it without resorting to Prince and the Pauper or Man in the Iron Mask tropes. He gives us a strong capable character who will neither take the situation lying down, nor does she need anyone’s rescue. This is a solid number one that takes the time to set up the story and it does it with style keeping your interest through all the political intrigue.
Francesco Manna’s art is lush and beautiful. From the throne room to a “slum shop” his settings and characters drip with atmosphere. The book is a much a pleasure to look at as it is to read.
If you’re looking for a new series to jump into and you enjoy action, politics, and strong female characters this one’s for you. We give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
