Dark Horse loves Darth Vader almost as much as I do. I thoroughly enjoyed their last Vader title, Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin, so I was very happy to see a new Vader book, Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows, hitting shelves this week.
The story takes place after Order 66 is given, thus exterminating the Jedi. A clone trooper, left for dead on a planet, lives on a farm and hears stories of one leader who hates the Jedi as much as he does. He sets out to find him and fight under his banner – Darth Vader.
It’s a simple but elegant premise, really. Written by Ninth Asssassin scribe Tim Siedell,we get a look at an actual clone trooper and see that clones don’t necessarily mean total duplicates – clearly, CT-5539, our protagonist, has developed his own consciousness and rationale. We get a glimpse into the scenes we really wanted to see in Episode 2 – the cloning facility, the training, the making of a clone trooper. Told in the first person, there’s a quiet, building rage that I expect to pay off in a big way when the clone meets The Man Himself. But what will happen then, is anyone’s guess. I can’t wait to see it.
Let’s talk about the art, because when it comes to Vader, it’s all about the art. I appreciate an artist that does Vader well, especially that cape. It’s all about movement, flow, and just being as menacing as humanly possible. I want to hear the Imperial March in my head when I see a drawing of Vader, and artist Gabriel Guzman does it. There isn’t a lot of Vader in this particular issue, but what there is, is captured beautifully and mostly in the shadows of CT5539’s mind’s eye. He emerges as this menacing savior of sorts, and it’s beautiful.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Siedell and Guzman have in store for future issues. Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows hits shelves tomorrow – add it to your pull list. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at some of the book courtesy of Dark Horse’s website.
