We have been reviewing Dark Horse books for years. So many of their comics have been just amazing. The last few years they’ve moved in to the toy and merchandise arena and have brought their class and attention to detail to this aspect as well. We were escorted through the booth by “Media Dude” Aubrey Driver who answered questions, talked comics and made us feel like rockstars.
The first thing we checked out was Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra limited edition 8 1/4” tall poly resin statuette. Available in May of 2016 and retailing for $79.99 I know a whole bunch of you will be pre-ordering this one asap.
Side by side in the case with Korra was the Avatar: The Last Airbender Aang 8 1/4” tall polyresin statuette, sculpted by Joe Menna. Which is also in pre-order.
Both are gorgeous, a definite must for fans of these series.
Dark Horse isn’t all about the anime of course. Coming in March of 2016 Dark Horse in bring us some Snoopy merchandise! Three sizes of the lovable mutt. A 10 inch, 5.5 inch coming in April (which is selling for $15.99) and a 2.5 mystery box (in June) which will come in at the $6 price point.
A new license, Outlander is seeing it’s fledgling merchandise run starting in March 2016. We’ll be getting tie-in drink-ware, journals and bookmarks, and we were told we should expect statues in the fall.
Then we got to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt statues. Created by CD Projekt RED The Witcher 3 was, deservedly, the most popular and critically acclaimed video game of 2015. Dark Horse has done great things already with the comic. The statues their bringing out will blow you away. Though coming out in September of 2016 the line almost didn’t get shown at Toy Fair this year. Only Geralt had been approved, the rest of the line getting the okay days before the show. The first figures to be released are Geralt, Triss, and Yennefer, followed by Ciri and the Wild Hunt King, Eredin. Each will be custom painted, displayed in deluxe window box packaging with a suggested retail price of $29.99.
These figures are far better quality than their $29.99 price point would lead you to believe. I didn’t get the official word on the scale, but they look to be 9 inch statues and the paint and detail is amazing.
Here’s a look at Ciri and Eredin,
As we walked Aub remarked “If you step back and look at the actual gaming stills and you compare them against the figures it’s kinda uncanny” “the gentle giant sculpts are great but the 3D renders from CD Project Red are awesome too…” Which is spot on. These figures look so much like the video game it is uncanny and if they can maintain that level of detail these pieces have when they go into production this will be a worthy collection indeed.
Part 2 of Dark Horse at Toy Fair is coming soon with Game of Thrones and Halo!
