Little change of pace here at What’cha Readin, I stumbled across this video probably a month ago, saw the preview and then it kind of slipped to the back of my brain. You know the spot full of cobwebs and thoughts you don’t share with “normal people”. Something caused me to drop by the site (danger5.tv) the other day to see what was new and was immediately blown away again by these guys. But I’m getting ahead of myself;
What is Danger 5? Only the best web series you’re not watching! From the synopsis “Set in a bizarre 1960’s inspired version of World War II action comedy series DANGER 5 follows a team of five spies on a mission to kill Adolf Hitler”. The team consists of expert spies from 5 different countries; Jackson from the USA, Tucker from Australia, Ilsa from Russia, Claire from Britain and Pierre from Europe all forced to work together to get it done. Watching it evokes fond memories of Our Man Flint and Matt Helm. Campy and self aware, it lampoons the genre and at the same time reminds us why we loved it (and still do).
Action comedy? How so? This show isn’t Austin Powers (which was great btw) no this show looks, sounds, smells and tastes like it was just found in some old television vault. They went all the way, the visual style, the acting, the sets, the music it all rings true. Even the dubbing is a little off. It almost defies explanation (which is kind of bad as I am writing an article about it). As I watch it I’m amazed that even the actors fit right into the era, I can’t imagine the criteria for the casting of this project.
You said web series right? Yes Virginia it is a web series each episode is around 5 minutes in length (there are 3 plus the trailer up as of this writing). Created by Dario Russo (who also Directed and Produced) and David Ashby (who also stars in the production) these two gentleman seem to have come from nowhere as IMDB list this as their first project, though Russo has worked as a gaffer previously. After viewing the trailer I think you’ll agree that these two have a future. And a web series may just be the best place for them to show their special brand of strange.
It’s a weird funny well done series and I don’t know how long it will last but I’ll stick around as long as it does, hope you check it out I think you’ll enjoy it.
