Courtney Crumrin: The Final Spell brings closure to the series

The final tale in the Courtney Crumrin series starts out with Courtney and her former teacher, Calpurnia, on the run from the Coven, as witch politics kick into overdrive. The distressing thing? Uncle Aloysius seems to have joined the hunt! But is he really siding with the Coven against his own niece? You have to read to find out!

I was hooked on this series thanks to the Free Comic Book Day issue I got this year; I promptly read and loved the fifth trade volume, The Witch Next Door. This sixth and final volume in Ted Naifeh’s series brings all the loose ends together to bring this series to its very satisfying end. We find out just how badass Courtney is when she needs to be, and we get a lot of closure when it comes to the many questions surrounding Aloysius. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Well… yes. And that’s the best you’ll get from me.

This is a great graphic novel to introduce to younger readers, especially for those who love Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Graveyard Book. It’s a witch tale, with spells, fireballs, coven politics, and freaky fantasy marketplaces, but it’s all accessible to readers of all ages. At the heart of the book is the story of a lonely little girl who adores her uncle. Her vapid parents have no clue about anything, so someone had to take her under his or her wing, right? There’s betrayal on many levels, and there’s redemption of sorts. There’s family and there’s payback. It’s a pretty epic scope, for an all-ages graphic novel – dig in, and discover her world for yourself.

The volume collects issues #6-10 and includes a cover gallery, plus a bonus 2002 excerpt from when Li’l Courtney met Uncle Al for the first time. The book’s not hitting shelves until August 20th, so get your orders in now! Four out of five magic fireballs.
