We first mentioned Corktown in October of 2015 in when Alterna Comics announced the series (Corktown – from Alterna Press) and we were definitely excited by what we’d seen and heard. Now that we’ve actually read the first issue we can get a bit more in-depth.
In Corktown writer Mario Candelaria and artist Scott Ewen bring us to the streets of Detroit, a rough city by the look of it and we see it in the cold heart of winter. People are being killed, seemingly by animal attack. It’s a mystery to the local police who’ve lost one of their own to one of these attacks and the slain officer’s partner is determined to figure it out. But this isn’t his story, it’s hers, the slain police officer is our main character and our biggest mystery. This is a monster story, ghosts, vampires, zombie-like creatures but done in a way that completely questions every trope we’re used to. Mario brings the reader right into the thick of the story, giving you what at first seems like the complete mystery. I was pleasantly surprised that the first reveal, which I immediately thought was “the twist” just led me on to the next even cooler reveal. I can honestly say I’m looking forward to peeling back the layers of this plot issue by issue.
From the press release:
“Set in the Corktown area of Detroit, Michigan, CORKTOWN follows the disembodied spirit of a fallen Detroit P.D. detective as she fights to stop her bloodthirsty reanimated corpse’s killing spree so she can finally rest in peace.”
Scott Ewen, Detroit native and Kubert School alumni, is handling all the art, except for the lettering which is being done by the always on point Zakk Saam. Scott has a great eye for atmosphere his inner city settings and monsters have all the right creep factor.

Corktown’s publisher Alterna Comics is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary this year and in the course of that celebration has released some great news. Having brokered a new distribution deal president and publisher Peter Simeti has said “Our readership is expected to grow globally up to 10 times in size over the course of the next two years…” Add that to the announcement that the Alterna Comics series “The Chair” has been adapted and the film is due to be released in 2017 it’s a fair bet that Alterna Comics is a publisher to watch.
