ComiXology Changes the Game! DRM-Free Back-Ups!

1

ComiXology Changes the Game with its SDCC announcement that DRM-Free back-ups will now be available!

In English? You can download .pdf or .cbz files of comics you’ve purchased through Comixology (participating publishers only). This is a huge change and one I think was long overdue. Participating publishers include Image Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Zenescope Entertainment, MonkeyBrain Comics, Thrillbent, and Top Shelf Productions. In order to ensure that it really is easy as the comiXology said it would be I took the liberty of buying some books this morning. I went for the MonkeyBrain Firsts bundle, it’s a collection of some of Monkeybrain Comics issue number 1’s, Bandette, Masks and Mobsters, Amelia Cole, and a few others.

Right after purchase I went into “My Books” and now next to every applicable title there’s a link to download.

So download I did, after checking the obligatory please don’t give this copy to anyone else box. As promised a great quality, local copy of the comic I purchased. My personal favorite is a .cbz file, which for the unititated is just a zip of images viewed through a cbr viewer. I’ve been using CDisplay Ex otherwise known as CBR Reader, which I do recommend. The .pdf’s are perfect as well. They also make it easy before purchase. If a books available for download you can see it right in the description…

I have to admit I was worried when Amazon acquired comiXology (still am a little) but this is a step in a very positive, very non-big brother direction.

So if the only thing holding you back from reading digital was the kind of rhapsody subscription angle, end your account lose your books, then that worry is behind you. At least for participating publishers.

Head over to comiXology.com and get reading, or as we say around here #GoBuyComics !
