The internet is constantly on fire with the latest horror story of misogyny, racism, class-ism, cronyism, gender bias… And rightfully so there’s a hell of a lot going wrong out there. But instead of highlighting the bad here we look for things that get it right.
Cash & Carrie gets it right.
It makes sense that it would. Cash & Carrie creator Shawn Pryor knows a bit about comics. From 2010 to 2014 he was President of Action Lab Entertainment, publisher of the Eisner-nominated Princeless, Shinobi Ninja Princess, Molly Danger, all books with not only strong female leads but supporting characters that are just as well realized. So what’s this Cash and Carrie thing he’s doing now?
C&C is an all ages mystery/adventure comic starring two middle school kids who solve crimes (think Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, just you know, modern.) Let’s check out our protagonists:
“Dallas Cash is an investigator and tenacious techie who believes in the supernatural, and Inez Carrie is an investigator as well as the captain of the wrestling team who bases her crime solving skills in realism.”
So on top of the other influences there’s the obvious X-Files vibe! And right off the bat I noticed, and appreciated, that the techie was the believer and the jock the “more sensible” of the two. But how about the story?
I read issue one and, though it was a first issue and was definitely setting up the story, it really served as a great introduction to these two and their world at Danville Junior High and rival Mason Middle School.
Misty the goat, the Danville school mascot, disappears and our stalwart investigators jump into the case, even though it means the clues will take them right in the lion’s den, their rival school’s campus! There’s action and suspense but all on a level that even the youngest comic book reader will enjoy (and yeah I did too!)
The art is approachable and cartoony, it fits the genre and intended age group perfectly, I really hope this series sees the response necessary to keep it going for a good long run.
