While all the computers in my home decided to die on me a couple of weeks ago, I spent a lot of time catching up with the comics and graphic novels that have been piling up on my desk. X, the Dark Horse title by Duane Swierczynski, with artwork by Eric Nguyen, has been one of those books that I kept wanting to get to, so I started with it.
Well, damn. I won’t make the mistake of falling behind on this book ever again.
X is the story of a masked vigilante who’s out to clean up the streets of Arcadia, a city overrun by corruption and organized crime. If you think it sounds familiar, you’re probably right. But the overall storyline is where the similarities end. X has no problems with using guns or with killing people who are trying to kill him. I’m waiting to find out his backstory, but for now, the trade, which collects issues #0-4 of the current, ongoing series, introduce us to X – a one-eyed, masked vigilante who wears a black hood with a red “X” painted on it.
Blogger Leigh Ferguson is working to expose the corruption in Arcadia, too. She runs her blog and sneaks around the city, taking pictures and keeping her ear to the ground in her quest to keep the people informed. She stumbles on one of X’s scenes and tries to find out more – which ends up being more than she’s bargained for.
Duane Swierczynski’s got X down. He’s angry, he’s damaged, and he’s out to make crime pay. I’m interested in learning more about this guy – is he a former cop or a crook who was betrayed? How did he lose that eye? Where does he get his ordnance, he’s seriously got a lot of firepower. Eric Nguyen’s art really makes the story come to life: it’s gritty, it’s dark, and it’s insanely violent. If you like your crime books no-holds-barred, X is your book.
X, Volume 1: Big Bad has been out since January, so check it out for yourself. The book is an ongoing title at Dark Horse, so add it to your pull list and get on board.
