Cullen Bunn’s Brides of Helheim is one of my favorite books of the year. I love a good Norse story, and he’s created such a rich saga between the first Helheim series, The Witch War, and now Brides of Helheim, that while I feel awful for poor Rikard, seemingly doomed to be denied entrance to Valhalla for eternity, I don’t want his adventures to end.
In this latest issue of Brides of Helheim, Rikard has the sorcerer Raevil in his custody. Raevil owes a blood debt, and just happens to be the sorcerer who taught magic to the witches that turned Rikard into a draugr. Raevil isn’t going down that easily, though. He’s a sorcerer – he’s always got a trick up his sleeve. And he may know something that can defeat even the dead. It’s not a great situation.
Nor is the situation between Sigrid and Brand. Brand is so clearly in love with her, but Sigrid’s heart belongs to… well, a dead guy. This relationship is doomed, or so Kadlin – remember her from The Witch War? – tries to explain to Sigrid, who shakes her off.
Another great issue from Cullen Bunn and Joelle Jones. And again, we’re left with questions that go deeper than what we see on the page. Is there any humanity remaining in Rikard, or is he just a soulless killing machine? What is Sigrid’s deal – and how will her feelings come into play after this issue’s cliffhanger? And honestly, will Bera and Groa please get hold of Raevil and play soccer with his head or something?
Brides of Helheim #3 hits shelves this Wednesday. If you’re not reading it by now, I strongly suggest you ask your local comic store to get issues 1 and 2 for you, while you can still catch up quickly. And treat yourself for the holidays, get a copy of The Witch War trade paperback for yourself. You deserve it.
