I was faithful. I waited. I watched. I hoped. Finally, like a sign from above (or below, considering where he’s been spending time lately), my inbox showed me the magic words I longed to hear: More Hellboy!
That’s right, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. are back together again – in the past. Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952 gives readers Hellboy’s first mission with the B.P.R.D., eight years after being discovered and adopted by Professor Bruttenholm. He’s been on base ever since, and now, for the first time, he’s venturing out… what could possibly go wrong, right?
Bizarre murders in Brazil lead to a request for the BPRD’s help, and Hellboy is put on the team. Not everyone on the team is thrilled about Hellboy being there, but then again, not everyone is thrilled about the B.P.R.D. snooping around in Brazil.
This is the first issue of a new ongoing series, and this first issue gives us a lot of setup. I can only imagine where this is all going to lead, and I can’t wait to read along and find out as this story arc moves forward. Mike Mignola and John Arcudi have storytelling duties on this issue, which makes me so happy – who can tell a Hellboy story better than Mignola? Alex Maleev’s art is gorgeous and moody, with Big Red standing out in every panel he’s featured in.
There’s even a variant sketch cover by Mignola himself that assures I’ll be meandering in the aisles of Royal Collectibles, waiting to see if I can score a copy for myself.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952 hits shelves on December 3rd. Plan your calendars and pull lists accordingly, and enjoy some art in the meantime.
