At BookCon this past year I met tons of amazing publishers with hundreds of new and exciting projects, and even through the convention memory haze I remember Blue Apple. The book I was checking out was a graphic novel / chapter book hybrid from the “Jump Into Chapters” book series called The Boulder Brothers: Meet Mo and Jo.
The book stars Mo and Jo, two caveman brothers who speak in simple sentences with opposite colored word balloons. The pluses here are pretty obvious, the simple sentences contain common sight words and the alternating word balloon color helps a child follow which character is speaking. Beyond that? It’s a fun book. Author Sarah Lynn presents problem solving in a humorous light that I’m sure young boys especially will enjoy. The first story “Me Stink?” is an examination on all the possible reasons why two young cavemen might be stinky and the solutions are parent friendly! They also play a favorite game, and try to make fire. All the stories have a light fun feel that will delight your pre-K and kindergartener. I can also see this format, the hybrid of graphic novel and chapter book, being very beneficial for late readers and english as a second language students. The simple sentence format seems like a much more intuitive way to learn.
The art, by Pierre Collet-Derby, has a cartoony retro feel. I like his style immensely…
You can find The Boulder Brothers: Meet Mo and Jo on Amazon, your favorite bookstore or (hopefully) in your local library. Head over to Blue Apple for more info, and come back to whatchareading.com for more Jump into Chapters book reviews, coming soon!
