Finally, after what felt like ages of BOOM! taunting us with the #whatisthisplace emails, The Woods has arrived.
The Woods starts off during what feels like an ordinary day in any high school setting – seniors moaning about screwing up their college choices, annoying jocks, nerds, a clash between student government and the principal – pretty standard stuff, right? Sure, until a flash of light and a rumble shakes the school, and everyone realizes they’re on a different plan – well, moon – but the point is, forget Kansas, Dorothy – THEY’RE NOT ON EARTH ANYMORE.
And then, the scary bat-bird things attack, terrifying students and teachers alike. But Adrian Roth (“The Genius”) has an idea – because he knows he’s better than the rest of these fools. And he knows that the strange piece of metal sticking out of the ground is a signal from whoever – or whatever – brought them there. They have to go into the Woods.
I loved this issue. The setup was fantastic – we get to meet nearly every person mentioned in BOOM!’s teasers, a solid setup, and the action kicks into gear fast. There’s no sacrifices here – there’s content and substance, and the end of the issue left me waiting for more. James Tynion, who’s also writing Batman Eternal, has writing duties here, and he’s in his element. He knows how to build up a story and leave us wanting more.
Michael Dialynas’ art starts out strong, and gets even better once we get into the fantasy world he creates once the school leaves earth. There’s this gorgeously spooky aspect to the art, which is perfect, because a school has LEFT THE PLANET. It’s otherworldly and sinister, and the fact that these kids are going to venture into a thick wood makes me wonder what other goodies and terrors Dialynas has in store for us.
THE WOODs is on shelves today – grab it, and add it to your pull list. 5 out of 5.
