I only have a passing knowledge of Ben 10, when I saw this book coming out I thought it would be worth taking a look.

Ben 10 #1
Jason Henderson (w) • Gordon Purcell (a & c)
Who knew vacation could be this exciting? Ben Tennyson and his teammates kick off a maelstrom of action when an ocean cruise brings Ben in the cross hairs of Ssserpent, who’s out to find a long-lost underwater society. But does Ben’s new, slightly oddball love interest harbor dark secrets of her own? Aliens, superpowers, ships and swimsuits: the perfect ingredients for high-seas adventure.
FC • 32 pages • $3.99
Bullet points:
•    Set in the current BEN 10: OMNIVERSE universe!
•    Ben’s now 16, and teamed up with a new alien sidekick and an even better Omnitrix!
•    Variant cover by Eddie Nunez!

So much of that was lost on me I almost decided to skip this one. I’m glad I didn’t, it was a great jumping on point. Jason Henderson didn’t waste time with setup or backstory (something giving some background would have been cool though) instead he just drops us right into Ben’s life. He’s famous, he’s a member of a superhero team and well he’s lonely. It’s relatable, well written, and fun.

Gordon Purcell has brought the look and style of the show right to the page, the villains and monsters are a little goofy looking (to this old man’s eye) but they’re definitely characters that I would have no problem with my kids reading.

So we’ve got a likable hero with cool powers, solid art, and an interesting plot. It’s a 3 out of 5 for my 43 year old self. My 8 year old self? Oh he gave it a 7 1/2 million out of 5! Did you see those monsters!
