Bedlam Issue #1 from Image – Sick, Twisted, and Beautiful.

Its very rare that i read a comic and find myself saying, What. Just. Happened. To say this book is disturbing would be am understatement. To say that it wasn’t also engrossing, intriguing and amazingly well written would be a crime.

From Imagecomics.com “Fillmore Press was once Madder Red, a homicidal maniac and criminal overlord who terrorized the town of Bedlam for years. Then he got better. This is what happens next.”

I recently bashed a couple of “horror” comics for being uber-violent and lacking in plot. This is an fine example of how it can be done right. As I said this book is disturbing, violent, and over the top but it’s done in an interesting and totally appropriate way.

I will read this book many many times. Riley Rossmo’s layouts are beautiful, his art simple but detailed. Jean-Paul Csuka’s colors using only blacks, grays, and reds for the flashbacks was arresting and the muted somehow sickly colors in the present definitely convey how disturbed our main character really is. The story, by Nick Spencer, is insane. Weaving back and forth from past to present showing us the horrors inflicted upon this city while at the same time showing us the “cured” Fillmore (who soooo isn’t) was masterful. I will admit, at times I needed to reread a page, reorient myself in the story but for me that added to the inherent madness of the piece.

I don’t know what the plans are for this story arc, how many issues it will run. In my opinion you should get this book, and add the series to your pull list. It is worth the read.
