Batman or Superman? - The Cast of Gotham Weighs in...

by Joe Grodensky @JoeGrodensky

There is big news this week in the world of Gotham. Not only is Monday November the 30, the fall finale, but a new trailer for Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will air during the show. This news is sure to make comic book fans everywhere tune into the show whether they are a fan or not. Of course, it’s only fair to interview some of the stars of Gotham so they could answer the age-old question, “Batman or Superman?” The stars were interviewed; Morena Baccarin (Leslie Tompkins), Cory Michael Smith (Ed Nygma), Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot), Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock), Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth), Erin Richards (Barbara Keane) and Drew Powell (Butch Gilzean) gave their answers.

It would be easy for one to assume that being they are cast members of Gotham, Batman would be a unanimous choice and the Man of Steel would not even be mentioned, but this was not the case. Some responses did have a bit of humor and a sense of cast loyalty to them. Morena said Batman because “I’m on Gotham, after all.” Cory too cited Gotham as his reasoning for saying Batman. He is quoted as saying, “David Mazouz, our little Bruce Wayne, is such a ferocious character I feel like if I don’t say Batman he might beat me up.” Robin, Sean and Erin didn’t hesitate to say Batman. Donal was the most diplomatic of the cast members. He does say he likes Superman but decides to go with Batman. Drew, however, was the lone Superman supporter in the interview. “Seriously, is that going to get me fired?”

It was only a one minute or clip but it was enjoyable because the cast enjoyed it. Whether it was their opinion or workplace loyalty, Batman was the favorite but for some it wasn’t that easy of an answer. Even before the movie, there’s always been a debate about who the better superhero is. I would say Batman. He is a self-made superhero. Superman already had his powers when he came to Earth. Bruce Wayne had to make himself Batman. He had to teach himself martial arts and various other skills needed to be a master of the night. What’cha Reading Editor-in-chief Chuck had this to say when asked which hero he would choose:

Batman. Every time. There is no situation where Bats won’t find a way to gain the upper hand. He’s the world’s greatest detective and tactician. Supes is just a dude from another planet who can fly.

Steven, also a staff writer for What’cha Reading is an avid Superman fan and supporter. He had this to say about the man of Steel:

Team Superman. I like Batman and I think Ben Affleck will be the definitive Batman, but Superman? He’s the grandfather of all superheroes. He’s the catalyst for this whole world. And we heard what Donal Logue said. He flies. He has heat vision. We know what he could do. Superman Lives! And Henry Cavill isn’t too bad on the eyes, either!

There you have it folks. You’ve heard from celebrities and ordinary citizens alike about which superhero is their favorite. This is one debate that will rage on even if they made ten Batman vs. Superman movies. Remember, the fall finale of Gotham complete with the Batman vs. Superman trailer, airs Monday night on Fox at 8pm. Check your local listings. You won’t want to miss it.
