Back to Classic BSG with Battlestar Galactica #1 from Dynamite Comics!

The new Battlestar Galactica series from Dynamite Comics isn’t new at all but a throwback to the original series. All your favorite characters are there, Apollo, (male) Starbuck, Commander Adama. Even characters you didn’t miss at all, like Dr Zee.

We find our Galactica commander in the grips of a nightmare. Conveniently one that tells the story of how they came to be the “ragtag, fugitive fleet’ that they are. The cyclon attack on the battlestars, the devastating attack on Caprica, even the death of Adama’s youngest son, Zach (I still love you Rick Springfield!).

Later we find him officiating at a ceremony commemorating the attacks. This is of course interrupted by a cylon attack. Off to the vipers we go. Except Apollo and Starbuck. It seems Adama has a special mission for them. A suicide mission with doomsday weapons that had been outlawed when their government still existed.

I enjoyed this story. It definitely had that nostalgic BSG feel to it. The characters’ personalities are familiar, as are the settings. I appreciated the overview so I knew where we were starting from. This is not yet another revision, this is a continuing story of the original show. The idea that there were were weapons that they didn’t use because of their danger and instability is interesting. As is the fact that they are desperate enough now not to care.

I’ll take the trip down memory lane with this title especially with new stories to keep me interested. The art is good, everyone is recognizable. The storytelling is tight, and well done. Definitely adding it to my pull list.
