2014 Harvey Awards Nominees Announced!

2014 Harvey Awards Nominees Announced! So the email came in today, the Harvey Awards Nominations have been announced. This is the 9th year that the Harvey Awards are being presented at Baltimore Comic Con. Some of the winners from last year include Fiona Staples and Brian K Vaughan for Saga, Jamie Hernandez for Love and Rockets, and Klaus Jansen for his work on Captain America. But what are the Harvey Awards you may ask?

From The Press Release:

Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry’s most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented September 6, 2014 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con. Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators – those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.”

Preview/Review - The Undoubtables - Solid Indie Heist Comic

Billed as “Ocean’s Elven” meets “Payback” the Undoubtables is an interesting story of crime and revenge.

Spade has been in Arizona State Penitentiary for six months, today that’s gonna change. His escape has been carefully planned and now he’s out and running…

undoubtables_01_001 undoubtables_01_002 undoubtables_01_003

undoubtables_01_004 undoubtables_01_005 undoubtables_01_006

Things look bleak but Spade’s got a plan! And the plan is a good one, he’s heading to New York to settle some scores and call in some markers. He assembles a crew and gets the ball rolling, unfortunately he steps on some toes in the process. I cringed as the plan started to unravel, with the bad guys, and the cops, and fate closing in. Things don’t go exactly as planned but the trip is worth the price of admission. The art is solid and the story is complex, this one gets a 3 out of 5. It comes out on comiXology on July 30th but you don’t need to wait, order the trade from the publisher Markosia or Amazon, or you can get it digitally (kindle).

Preview/Review – The Devilers #1 – Joshua Hale Fialkov & Matt Triano

Wow, talk about an intense opening… “Take for example Plymouth 1956. Abigail Francis Hale. Perfectly normal one day, the next speaking in tongues, masturbating in public, and cutting herself with any sharp objects nearby. Diagnosis? Demonic possession. In truth? We know now that it was an auto-immune Encephalitis. A swelling in her brain.” That’s our introduction to a world just like our own, hell, demons, the devil are all concepts believed in by some and looked at as more than a little fictitious by others. Even the seven chosen to defend us aren’t all that sure what they really believe in. But the gates of hell have opened and it looks like they’re going to try to save us all. This is a strong first issue in a cool new action/horror series, the gates of hell are open and demons are coming through.
