The Assassin’s Creed franchise has become a household name in the gaming world since it was first released in 2007. The original game, set during the Middle Ages, spawned four main sequels and other supplemental games set in various periods of history dating from the Renaissance to Industrial Revolution-era England. There is even a movie in the works based on the franchise starring Michael Fassbender. Well, Titan comics has jumped into the fray by releasing an “Assassin’s Creed” comic book series. In the current issue, Assassin’s Creed #3 Trial By Fire, writers Anthony Del Col and Connor McCreery along with artist Neil Edwards take us to Salem in 1692. Brotherhood members Tom Stoddard and Jennifer Querry must save a little girl from the mob who believes she is the devil because she is in an epileptic state.
As a fan of the games, I was happy to read this comic and it did not disappoint. Del Col and McCreery put out a great story and kept to the details of the game. “Trial By Fire” had everything from the wrist blades to the Aminus to Abstergo. The story was exciting, with the little girl having powers and Tom and Jennifer arguing over the value of life vs. the rules of the Brotherhood. And you also have Xavier, Kody, Galina and Charlotte trying to escape Abstergo while uncovering secrets about the templars in the Aminus. There’s a traitor revealed but you’ll have to read the issue to find out who it was. Neil Edwards is a superb artist using vivid colors and lifelike details to bring the pages to life. I felt like I was in Salem riding with Tom and Jennifer trying to save the girl.
For anyone who likes action, suspense and history, the Assassin’s Creed series is for you. I know I will be reading this series from now on because it has everything I like. At the end, it even has a page about Salem in 1692 which I found interesting. The cover art, done masterfully by Dennis Calero, looks like something out of the game. I highly recommend giving this series a try, you will not be disappointed.
