If you follow what we do around here at What’cha Reading you are no doubt aware that we were huge fans of Asbury Park Comic Con. I’m not ashamed to say that I was really upset when I was told the convention was moving from that quaint little bar filled pierced tattoo’d town.
I was upset until I spoke to convention organizer Cliff Galbraith. The details he filled me in on both at Boston Comic Con and just this past weekend at NYCC were enlightening to say the least. And the press release we received today gives us a fair idea of what Cliff was dealing with…
“While we love Asbury Park, the prospect of running another comic convention in the city by the sea was not in the cards. The Berkeley Hotel was unable to accommodate our needs and we felt it was time to move to an actual convention center.”
So instead of just letting go of all the work he’s done over the last several years building the convention from 30 or so tables in a bowling alley to the dilapidated (and later condemned) Asbury Park Convention Center to the Berkley Hotel where the con took up three convention rooms and all the halls and open spaces surrounding them, Cliff is taking on the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus NJ!
Boasting guests like Bob Wiacek, Jim Salicrup, Mark Morales, Larry Hama, Don McGregor, Brandon Montclare, Ann Nocenti, Amy Reeder, Jim Steranko, Herb Trimpe, Fred Van Lente, Arthur Adams, Simon Bisley, Paul Kupperberg and many more listed and to be announced (the venue can hold 300+ booths and tables) this should be a great show.
The other thing about Asbury that we all loved was the local talent. We found people there who published their own books, had small publishing deals, Xeroxed and gaffer’s taped their books, it was the full comic experience. And from the buzz I was hearing at NYCC this upcoming show will have all that again.
The show will be held at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ, on April 11 & 12, 2015 (go to see all the details at www.eccomicon.com). From what I gathered from the rest of the email the convention center, located 10 minutes from NYC, is convenient to NJ transit (Cliff told me the bus from Port Authority literally pulls up in front of the place). It was even mentioned that there was (dare I say it) free parking?
Then right there at the end of Cliff’s email he added something that made me smile…
“For those who are disappointed about our leaving Asbury Park, take heart: We are negotiating with the city, hotel and Convention Hall to hold a con in Asbury Park in 2016. Much like like Frosty the Snowman, Asbury Park Comicon ‘will be back again one day.'”
Well I think it’s safe to say What’cha Reading’s crew will be on hand at the Meadowlands, looking for new and exciting things to review for all you wonderful people. But hey why don’t you come to the show and find the stuff with us! We’d love to see you there!
