Since the début of Afterlife with Archie, Archie and the gang have experienced a resurgence in popularity. While there have often been crossovers, Archie Meets Kiss comes to mind, the renewed respect for the kids from Riverdale leads to more intriguing pairings. While still played for laughs for the most part, the creators of Archie are willing to let him meet up with characters with more of a dangerous edge. Two of the most interesting are showcased in the new miniseries, Archie vs Predator.
The Riverdale gang is preparing for Spring Break but they have no place to go. Thankfully Jughead manages to eat his way to becoming a sweepstakes winner with the prize being a trip to an island resort. While there the gang has the usual drama. Cheryl and her brother start trouble, Betty and Veronica fight over Archie and Jughead battles waffles to the death. One night, in the midst of all that they spy a shooting star. Little do they know this is no shooting star. It’s a ship carrying the Predator to earth.
This was a fun read but not much happened in it. The Predator is simply scoping out his prey. I assumed the action would all take place on the island but it appears that the Predator will be journeying to Riverdale, which leads to more story potential. Rather than playing out the “most dangerous game” on an island, they’ll be on their home turf with more in their favor. How it all works remains to be seen. I have to say I enjoyed the one page back up story more. Where Sabrina meets a favorite in the Dark Horse universe. I’ll leave it as a surprise so you can enjoy it as much as I did. I can’t wait to see where that story is leading.
I’m giving Archie vs Predator 3 out of 5 stars, with a 4 out of 5 for the Sabrina mini story. While there was no action in it at all it was definitely enjoyable enough to make me pick up issue 2.
