I’ve always liked Archie Andrews. He’s easily one of the most accessible and iconic of comic characters, arguably our generation and our parents grew up with him. But, here’s the kicker, while I’ve always liked Archie, I never really read much of Archie. And, mind you, this is coming from the guy whose Twitter handle is @reggiemantleIII Go figure.
Next Wednesday, July 8th, features the long-awaited debut of Archie #1 by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples. It’s a wildly imaginative reboot of the character and another strong reason why comic fans and those looking at getting into comics should check out everything their publishing – The Fox under their Dark Circle Comics imprint and Sabrina The Teenage Witch from their Archie imprint are just two of their titles worth reading among a sea of several.
Issue #1’s are a special opportunity for everyone to get in on the ground floor for something special. Archie #1 is, undeniably, something cool, refreshing, and worthwhile. Here are a few of the pages from the upcoming issue and you should immediately notice a change in direction, tone, and style. Two thumps up to Mark Waid and Fiona Staples for giving Archie a John Hughes, “Ferris Bueller”, Christopher Lawrence’s “Scrubs” feel to the issue. Check it out and let us know what you think.
