Archer & Armstrong #6 “Wrath of the Eternal Warrior” January 16th!

Our boys, Archer and Armstrong, seemed to have stopped “The Sect” quite handily. Archer had to turn his back on the people he thought of as family and trust that Armstrong, a drunk abrasive braggart really was what he claimed, an immortal on the side of good. But all in all it turned out well, kind of.

Unfortunately, in the process of thwarting The Sect’s plan to activate an incredibly dangerous weapon (known as the Boon) the mystical Speaker For the Earth, the Geomancer, was killed. That would be bad enough but the Geomancer has always had a protector, the Eternal Warrior, and he is pissed. He’s been chasing Archer and Armstrong assuming the Geomancer’s death was their doing. They might have been able to reason with him, convinced him they weren’t at fault. They might have, if not for the fact the Eternal Warrior is Gilad Anni-Padda, Armstrong’s brother, and let’s just say they haven’t been the closest of family for quite some time.

So Gilad is hot on their trail and they know the only way to shake him for good is to find the new Geomancer, which hopefully will sway Gilad to leave them be…..

The previous paragraphs must seem pretty dense to those of you who haven’ tried this book yet, don’t let that dissuade you. This book reads like a buddy-pic-action-comedy-drama (If such a genre doesn’t yet exist I claim creation of it!). All the big words and immortal talk just sails right by as you lose yourself in this action packed series. Fred Van Lente writes this series so well it literally just carries you along as you read it. The pacing is superb and the plot is thick enough to engage the reader without being a turn-off.

Though it’s probably the dynamic between our heroes that really sells me every month. Obidiah Archer is a young, well-bred, stiff. Raised by religious zealots and just entering into the real world. Armstrong is a man of mythic proportions and tastes. He’s been everywhere, done everything and wants to try it all again. Somehow they seem to really be bonding. It doesn’t seem forced or improbable, it just works. Formulaic? Yes, but in a good way.

Then to top it all off you have Emanuela Lupacchino, whose work I loved in X-Factor, doing the art. Same great layouts and camera angles (for lack of a better phrase) and her close-ups leap off the page.

If you haven’t given Archer & Armstrong a shot you’re missing out on a phenomenal book. Any it’s done so well you can jump in anytime. I highly recommend it.

Oh by the way, if you were a fan of the original Valiant Universe and feel like the All-new Geomancer story-line feels a tad familiar. Well rest assured this guy isn’t making a comeback…
