Ahead of its release, UK’s Empire magazine released an exclusive new still from Roar Uthaug’s upcoming film, Tomb Raider. The new image features Academy Award winning actress Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, taking aim with her trademark bow and arrow. You could view the image below:
The upcoming Empire magazine also goes on to reveal a few new details about the Tomb Raider reboot which finds Lara Croft as “cycle courier in London” and unlike a search for some MacGuffin, the film finds a younger Lara Croft “on a quest to find her missing father (Dominic West).” Headlining star Alicia Vikander went on to say “We asked, ‘What are the famous traits of this person?’ How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?’”
Tomb Raider looks more and more exciting each day with every new detail uncovered. As much as I enjoyed the Angelina Jolie films and would have loved to see a third installment, I believe Alicia Vikander is an amazingly inspired choice for Lara Croft. With six months to go until the film opens, I’d wager that we could see the first trailer for Tomb Raider some time this November.
The film follows Lara Croft as she sets out on her first expedition to finish her father’s (Dominic West) research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.
MGM and Warner Bros. are co-producing the film, with MGM overseeing production. The studios acquired the rights from GK Films, which had previously purchased the film rights in 2011 from Square Enix Ltd. Graham King is producing.
Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Dominic West. The film is directed by Roar Uthaug, from a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Tomb Raider opens March 16, 2018.
