This week’s episode of Marvel’s Agent Carter starts off with Dr. Jason Wilkes (Reggie Austin) discovering that he attracts zero matter and when he absorbs it, becomes human again at least temporarily. Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) gets an idea to steal Jane Scott’s body, which is covered in zero matter. Jason warns of Whitney Frost’s (Wynn Everett) intentions to recreate the zero matter atomic bomb using Jane Scott’s body. They are too late, but Peggy learns of a site where nuclear warheads are being held that could be used to make the bomb. With the help of Dr. Jason Wilkes (Reggie Austin), Rose (Lesley Boone) and Dr. Samberly (Matt Braunger), Agent Sousa (Enver Gjokaj), Agent Carter and Jarvis (James D’Arcy) sneak into Roxxon to clear out the remaining nuclear warheads necessary to make the zero matter bomb before Frost gets to them.
This was the funniest episode of Marvel’s Agent Carter that I have seen. It’s amazing how the lengths Peggy goes to solve a case get more extreme each episode. She sneaks into Roxxon to find where Hugh Jones (Ray Wise) keeps an access key. When he comes on to her disguise as a flirty secretary, she zaps him with Dr. Samberly’s memory inhibitor. It gets to the point where she has too much fun with it. She keeps zapping him until she finds the key in his belt buckle. Jarvis is such a great character to compliment Peggy with his one-liners and nervous personality. You can’t help but laugh at his reactions to her ideas like stealing a corpse or sneaking into a company that holds nuclear weapons. Hayley Atwell does a terrific job of putting on an American accent when necessary and shows how talented an actress she is. Rose and Dr. Samberly made quite a comedic team whether it be in the lab over pie or posing as husband and wife to gain access to Roxxon. I hope to see them used again in future episodes.
While most of episode was funny, it did turn dark as Whitney continues to feed into her zero matter abilities. She is becoming a formiable adversary for Agent Carter. They both have the same type of personality and won’t-take-no-for-an-answer attitude but use these commonalities in completely different ways. These traits clash in an epic, but bloody near-death fight scene. Whitney is also very manipulative, especially when it comes to her husband, Calvin Chadwick (Currie Graham) and his lust for power. She convinces him to make a deal with mob boss Joseph Manfredi (Ken Marino) to acquire help with transporting the warheads. When Calvin goes back at her, she grabs him by the neck and lifts him up as a warning to watch his mouth.
This season of Marvel’s Agent Carter is nothing but fun. There is love, action, adventure, humor and shock value. Next week is another 2-hour event so we can only imagine what’s in store for us viewers and for the characters. We’ve gotten more insight to the personal lives and back stories of the characters which enriches the show and makes them more relatable. One part of me wishes this show would be a full season show but the other part of me says the way Marvel and ABC have it is perfect. Either way, the show is top-notch and worth watching.
Marvel’s Agent Carter airs Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC. Check your local listings.
