Afterlife With Archie, Vol. 1 – This ain’t the Riverdale you think it is.

We’ve got some big Afterlife with Archie fans here at What’cha Reading – Chuck, our editor monkey, has been reviewing every issue (if you wander around, you’ll find them all), and Nancy Joyce, who is my evil twin when it comes to what we read, has been castigating me for letting the issues pile up on my night table. I sat down and dug in the other night, and I may never be the same again.

Afterlife With Archie, Vol. 1 - This ain't the Riverdale you think it is.

Riverdale is burning. Literally, burning. There’s a zombie apocalypse happening, and Hot Dog – Jughead’s beloved pup – is Ground Zero. After being hit by a car, Jughead pleads with Sabrina the Teenage Witch to save him. What follows is a Pet Sematary-esque situation that brings Hot Dog back… but he isn’t in the mood for Nathan’s, folks.

As the zombie plague spreads across Riverdale, we see the Archie gang we know and love – including our favorite nerd, Dilton Doiley, who’s a horror movie trope encyclopedia, and Kevin Keller, who can rock a bow and arrow – take that, haters! – trying to wrap their heads around what’s happening. After a school dance turns into horror movie material, the gang makes a break for the Lodge mansion, home of Veronica Lodge. But is everyone really okay once they arrive?

The trade paperback, which hit stores on June 4th, collects issues #1-5 of the series, and is a must-have for Archie fans, zombie fans, and fans of a good story with amazing art. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa manages to capture the essence of the characters that we all know and love, while putting a realistic spin on them. He sets them in this horrific universe, and I bought it. Not for one moment did I feel like I was reading an Archie knock-off.

Francsesco Francavilla and Jack Morelli’s art is INSANE. And I mean that in the best of ways. It’s moody, dark, brooding, and makes your heart break and skin crawl all at once.

Everything is right about this book. I can’t wait for Volume 2.
