A1 #1 A new anthology from Titan Comics! 4 out of 5!

I am not much of an anthology reader. When it comes to comic anthologies they’re usually short on story and long on price (Yes I talking about you Dark Horse Presents, $7.99 yeesh). There was one recent notable exception, Jimmy Palmiotti’s Creator Owner Comics, which wasn’t only an anthology it ran articles and interviews as well.

So when Titan Comics sent out announcements that there would be an anthology in their future I groaned a little. That groan was really premature…

a1 coverThree stories approx 12 pages a piece, let’s break them down one by one shall we?

Weirding Willows, by writer Dave Elliott and artists Barnaby Bagenda, Sami Basri, Sakti Yuwono & Jessica Kholinne –

What happens if you take characters from; The Island of Dr Moreau, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and a bunch of others and mix them liberally? Well if you’re a deft writer you get a pretty interesting opening chapter, though it is mostly set-dressing and introductions there was enough of a story here (primarily concerning the good Doctor, his daughter Alice, and a mysterious request to create flying monkeys) to make me want to read the next installment.

A1 Carpe DIEm coverCarpe DIEm, by writer W. H. Rauf and artist/creator Rhoald Marcelius –

This is a thrill a panel smash’em up spy story. Ok it’s also goofy as all hell. Loved it. The story follows seven deadliest assassins, one for each day of the week, Their Leader is always Sir Moday… but the rest of the team always hate Mondays. Wacky and violent, with really strong art and very fun quippy dialogue.

A1 Odyssey coverOdyssey, by writer Dave Elliott and artists Garrie Gastonny and Sakti Yuwono, –

I was completely blindsided by this one. Looks like a Captain America rip-off right? Nope. There is no way to recap this story without giving away what’s so damn cool/disturbing about it. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

This book was so much better than I thought it would be when I saw the solicits. Now comes the bigger question, can they sustain it? I’ll be buying it on Wednesday, and next month, let’s see how it goes.

You don’t buy print comics anymore? Well go here A1 #1, and buy it at comixology. See? No reason not to read a good new book. And hey, if you do buy it at comixology I understand there’s some extra content… Hmm maybe I’ll buy both?
