Back in 2007, during the previews that played before Transformers, audiences got a trailer for a film simply referred to as 1.18.08 – Featuring a hip party taking place in a New York City apartment, an earthquake and loud roar rumbles the fun right out of the room. The kids take to the roof, see a building come down, and as they make their way to the street, the head of the Statue of Liberty lands right in the street. That’s all we got from the trailer and thus began months of rabid speculation over the secretive Bad Robot and J.J. Abrams film. Was it a new Godzilla movie? Was it Cthulu? No one knew until the title was released – Cloverfield – and the rest is history.
During a late night screening of the Michael Bay film 13 Hours, audiences saw a new trailer. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr, and John Goodman as a seemingly happy family. Music plays in the background, they’re seen playing Life, and then things spiral way out of control. Winstead attacks Goodman, escapes out of their house which is revealed to be a cellar, and – 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Yup, 10 Cloverfield Lane. J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot have pulled another one of their ultra secretive, fast ones over the generally hip movie goers. A long talked about and will they ever do a sequel to Cloverfield is already, seemingly, in the can! And… the Cloverfield sequel, entitled 10 Cloverfield Lane releases March 11th of this year! Only two weeks before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
“The idea came up a long time ago during production,” J.J. Abrams said via an official statement from Paramount. “We wanted to make it a blood relative of ‘Cloverfield’. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.” – J.J. Abrams revealed exclusively to Collider.
It’s unclear exactly how directly this “blood relative” will serve as a Cloverfield sequel and the mystery calls into question all the facts that have been revealed about the project so far. While promoting her film Faults, Winstead revealed the following about her then untitled movie which no one even had an idea would turn out to be a sequel to Cloverfield:
“He tells me that basically the world is over outside because there’s been a nuclear fall-out. It does have similarity to Faults, in some ways, because you don’t know who’s telling the truth or who to believe. There’s a lot of, who’s manipulating who, and all of that. Tonally, it’s very different, but it has some of those same themes.”
Kudos to you J.J. Abrams. I never saw this one coming and now I’m massively excited for what you have in store at 10 Cloverfield Lane!
– Dan Trachtenberg is directing. This will be his first major feature.
